Russia fails to overturn athlete ban for Rio Olympics 2016

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has dismissed the request filed by the Russian Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes. As a consequence the Russian Olympic Committee is not entitled to nominate Russian track and field athletes for the Olympic Games unless they fulfill these specific criteria. Since the international Olympic Committee was not a party to these arbitrations, the CAS as no jurisdiction to determine whether the IOC is entitled to accept or refuse the nomination by the Russian Olympic Committee of Russian track and field athletes to compete at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The High Court has directed Housing and Public Works Minister Eng. Mosharrof Hossain to surrender before trial court within 6 weeks in a case relating to acquiring wealth beyond known source of income. Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain passed the order after rejecting a petition filed by Mosharraf challenging legality of the proceedings of the corruption case.The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Ramna Police Station on the 25th of November, 2007 against Mosharraf on charge of amassing 3 crore taka wealth and concealing information.

 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said capability of Bangladesh in rapid combating of militancy is now worthy to follow by many in the world. She was speaking at the 41st founding anniversary programme of President Guard Regiment-PGR held at the PGR Headquarters at Dhaka Cantonment this morning. The Prime Minister said the world leaders are by the side of Bangladesh at this hour. Sheikh Hasina thanked the PGR members for discharging their responsibilities with sincerity. Pointing that the tactics of militancy has changed due to technological advancement, the Prime Minister said the training of PGR should also be modern and time befitting.

 

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council -ECNEC has approved eight projects including strengthening power transmission system between Dhaka and Chittagong. The approval was given at the weekly ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of eight projects were approved today with an overall outlay of 7 thousand 868 crore taka.

Donald Trump has said if he is elected US president he may abandon a guarantee of protection to fellow NATO countries. Speaking to the New York Times, Trump said the US would only come to the aid of allies if they have fulfilled their obligations to them. Members of Nato have all signed a treaty that says they will come to the aid of any member that is attacked.

 

Turkey’s president has declared a state of emergency for three months following Friday night’s failed army coup. The emergency allows the president and cabinet to bypass parliament when drafting new laws and to restrict or suspend rights and freedoms. Speaking at the presidential palace in Ankara, Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed that all the viruses within the armed forces will be cleansed.
