Head of Counter Terrorism Unit of police Monirul Islam has said the banned militant outfit Harkatul Jihad is reorganising afresh. Huji came into limelight in the nineties through their bomb attack on Udichi rally in Jessore. Later by carrying out grenade attack on British High Commissioner Anowar Chowdhury in Sylhet and the 21st of August grenade attack on Awami League rally they displayed their strength. The organisation carried out the attacks under the leadership of Mufti Abdul Hannan. But after the imprisonment of top leaders it was weakened organisationally. After the recent police drive against various militant organisations, detectives got information about reorganisation of Harkatul Jihad. Monirul Islam further informed that many of its members have taken training abroad. He said action will be taken against those who are providing financial assistance to the banned organisation.
Imam of Sholakia Maulana Farid Uddin Masud has said, militancy cannot be uprooted if financial institutions of Jamaat and books written by Moududi are not banned. He made the comment at a seminar organised by Awami League at the Engineers Institution in the capital today. Addressing the seminar Prime Minister’s Political Adviser HT Imam said, the way BNP is raising questions about the successful anti-militant operation of the police proves that they are instigating militancy. The seminar demanded formation of anti militant and anti terrorism cell comprising representatives from all walks of life including alem and Ulemas.
BNP will formally send letters to various political parties and professionals to attend a tea party to form a separate anti militancy platform. This was informed by policy makers of the party. They also said, party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will meet several political parties including Gono Forum, Bikolpodhara, Krishak Sramik Jonota League and JSD at the beginning of next month. Meanwhile, positive response has already been received from Bikolpodhara of Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury, Krishak Sramik Jonota League of Kader Siddiqui and JSD of ASM Abdur Rob. They expressed the hope that the ruling party would respond to the call of party chief Begum Khaleda Zia to forge national unity to combat militancy.
15 lac people affected by flood in 16 districts.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhur Maya has said that adequate relief and medical assistance is being provided to about 15 lac people affected by flood in 59 upazilas of 16 districts across the country. He informed this while address a press conference on the flood situation in the country. The Minister claimed that there is no irregularity in relief distribution and this programme will continue till rehabilitation of the flood victims.
Meanwhile, the waters of various rivers in the country have been receding slightly. But more than 10 lac flood affected people in several districts are still marooned. Besides a vast area of Fulchhari in Gaibandha has been inundated due to breach of flood protection embankment. Movement of trains on Jamalpur-Dewanganj route remained suspended following inundation of railway line in Jamalpur. Local administrations have informed that relief operation is being carried out for the flood-affected people.
Ferry movement on Daulatdia-Paturia river route has been disrupted due to strong current in the river Padma. Two out of four ferry ghats at Daulatdia were damaged fully while another one partially. There is long queue of vehicles as only one ferry is in operation. At the same time bigger and old ferries are not being able to ply owing to strong current in the river. Passengers say, long queue of vehicles almost every day during last one week is causing sufferings to them. Besides, the commodities being carried by trucks are also being damaged.
