over 50 garments factories still remain shut at Ashulia. Outsiders are instigating the workers, alleges Commerce Minister.Factory owners are facing problem owing to closure of 59 garments factories for straight three days at Ashulia in Savar. The owners are being unable to make shipment of their merchandise for the buyers. About one lac workers have resorted to strike and stage demonstration stopping production for straight ten days. BGMEA says, they closed down the factories following workers movement demanding increased salary and allowances. So far 12 workers have been arrested in three cases filed by the owners.
Newly elected Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has pledged to work taking all, irrespective of party and opinion for development of the city. She made the remark while visiting the residence of her closest rival Sakhawat Hossain Khan this morning. The incumbent mayor announced to continue the trend of development that she has been continuing for the last 13 years. Ivy also spoke about implementing part of her election manifesto for the development work. Sakhawat Hossain Khan assured to cooperate the new mayor in her efforts.
Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has demanded judicial enquiry bringing allegation of rigging in Narayanganj City polls. Speaking at a news conference at party central office at Nayapaltan he said the people’s mandate has not been reflected in the election as the government twisted the result under the cover of congenial electoral atmosphere. Rizvi said presence of voters was less due to frightful environment created following non-deployment of army but the number of voters was shown to be larger.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said, democracy has won in Narayanganj election and BNP’s allegation about rigging is ridiculous. Inaugurating SBF Comprehensive Kidney Care Center at Kallyanpur in the capital he said the Narayanganj election would remain as inimitable in the history of the country. Later, the Road Transport and Bridges Minister inaugurated the century anniversary of Mirpur Siddhanto High School.
The people of Narayanganj have heaved a sigh of relief following holding of the election in a free, fair, peaceful and festive manner. Expressing gratitude to those concerned the locals demanded of the newly elected mayor to transform their city into a developed and modern one. Meanwhile, the representatives of the civil society think that Selina Hayat Ivy’s victory with a huge margin is a warning signal for the evil force in Narayanganj.
The Awami League supported candidates have got majority in councillor posts also in Narayanganj City Corporation election. They have won in 13 out of the total 27 general ward councillor posts. The BNP supported ward councillors secured 12 councillor posts. Jatiya Party got one while BSD supported candidate one post.
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim has said BNP was beaten in Narayanganj city election due to weak candidate. He was speaking at the conference of health assistance at Diploma Engineers Institution at Kakrail in the capital. On the other hand, Awami League Publicity Secretary Hasan Mahmud has urged BNP to prepare for the next national election, taking lesson from the Narayanganj polls. He made the call at a memorial meeting on late Awami League general secretary Abdur Razzak at Shilpokola Academy
